COUGAR SIGHTINGS IN YELLOWKNIFE!

MEDIA ADVISORY
June 19, 2008
11:00 a.m.

Closure of Parker Park:
Yellowknife, NT - The City of Yellowknife wishes to advise the public that Parker Park has been closed until further notice due to recent cougar sightings in the area. The GNWT Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) has placed a live trap in the area between the two ball diamonds at Parker Park, and advise that residents should avoid the area and not go near the live trap. Please take precaution and note that pets and small children should especially be kept away from the area.

Parker Park will remain closed until confirmation from ENR that the cougar has been trapped and removed from the area.

For more information, please contact the ENR general inquiry line at 873-7184

Wildlife officers say there was a cougar reported within Yellowknife city limits yesterday.

While it isn't confirmed that the animal is a cougar...some cyclists spotted an animal fitting the description on Fiddler's Road.

Wildlife officer Raymond Bourget says the animal was reported to have the same tawny-brown color of a cougar, similar markings and a long tail.

Officials are not taking any measures to remove the animal.

Bourget says it ran away from the cyclists who spotted it.

So it doesn't appear to be a threat to people.

He advises not to let dogs wander far ahead of you in off-leash areas for the their own safety.

And if humans spot a cougar...it's recommended to make yourself look as large as possible and back away slowly.

For more information please email Environment and Natural Resources Wildlife Officer Raymond BourgetRaymond_Bourget@gov.nt.ca

We still need you to GET ON BOARD!

We had an information meeting April 10th to let people know what we need in terms of new board members.

Eleven people attended the big meeting but we have noticed that not many people are coming to our board meetings. There is a lot of new information posted to the GET ON BOARD! page so please read through and it should answer all of your questions.

The board will change in September 2008 so we need people interested in becoming board members to start attending meetings at the end of this month - May 28th at 7 :00 pm at Nova Court Hotel.

For more information please email nwtspca@theedge.ca

DON'T RUN YOUR DOG BESIDE YOUR VEHICLE!

Recently, another dog was killed after running alongside his human's vehicle. He veered in front and was hit and killed by his own person.

TOO MANY dogs have been killed in Yellowknife being run next to vehicles. Don't let your dog be next!

Always exercise your dog in a safe area and never run them next to a vehicle. If you see someone else doing it, carefully stop them and ask them to stop. Help do your part to make sure that all dogs are protected from this fatal pastime.

Help spread the word... download the Dogs Beside Vehicles Poster and post it in your place of work!

THE NWT SPCA BOARD NEEDS YOU!

President Janet Pacey, Vice President Robin Weber and two other board members are leaving the NWT SPCA in September 2008. We need to start training people now to take over the Board so that the NWT SPCA will continue operating.

If you have an interest in the welfare of animals and want to make a difference, please consider joining the Board of Directors.

As of Feb 3, 2008 there are only two new people considering joining even though we've done lots of press over the past few weeks.

We don't want to see this organization disintegrate - please join?

If you have any questions pleaseEMAIL US!
